Cochlear Implants: Signal Processing and Speech Perception
نویسندگان
چکیده
Several million Americans today have profound hearing loss, and for years they had to rely on conventional hearing aids. Although hearing aids have been found to benefit hearing impaired individuals who suffer mild to moderate deafness, they do not seem to provide much benefit to individuals with profound (sensorineural) deafness. Today, a prosthetic device, a cochlear implant, can be implanted in the inner ear to restore partial hearing to profoundly deaf people. Cochlear implants are now established as a new option for individuals with profound hearing impairments. Most individuals who are implanted with cochlear prosthesis are able to understand speech without lipreading and can communicate over the phone. This article presents an overview of cochlear implants, describing the signal processing and stimulation strategies they employ and summarizing key research findings.

Speech Perception in Children with Cochlear Implants
Cochlear implants provide access to the speech signal in children with hearing loss that often cannot benefit from acoustic hearing aids. However, despite the numerous positive results in pediatric cochlear implantation, published data still indicated a wide range of performance among implant recipients. Hence, a need to study the possible variables that can affect performance, could account fo...
متن کاملCorrelation between Auditory Spectral Resolution and Speech Perception in Children with Cochlear Implants
Background: Variability in speech performance is a major concern for children with cochlear implants (CIs). Spectral resolution is an important acoustic component in speech perception. Considerable variability and limitations of spectral resolution in children with CIs may lead to individual differences in speech performance. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between auditory ...
متن کاملRelationship between Working Memory, Auditory Perception and Speech Intelligibility in Cochlear Implanted Children of Elementary School
Objectives: This study examined the relationship between working and short-term memory performance, and their effects on cochlear implant outcomes (speech perception and speech production) in cochlear implanted children aged 7-13 years. The study also compared the memory performance of cochlear implanted children with their normal hearing peers. Methods: Thirty-one cochlear impl...
متن کاملComparison of Auditory Perception in Cochlear Implanted Children with and without Additional Disabilities
Background: The number of children with cochlear implants who have other difficulties such as attention deficiency and cerebral palsy has increased dramatically. Despite the need for information on the results of cochlear implantation in this group, the available literature is extremely limited. We, therefore, sought to compare the levels of auditory perception in children with cochlear implant...
متن کاملSpeech Processing Strategies for Cochlear Prostheses-the Past, Present and Future: a Tutorial Review
Cochlear Implants are widely accepted prosthetic devices that improve the hearing ability of people with profound hearing loss. The cochlear implant speech processor is responsible for decomposing the input sound into different frequency bands and delivering the most appropriate pattern to the electrodes. The performance of the cochlear prostheses depends on various parameters such as number of...
متن کاملUsing a Personal Computer to Perform Real-Time Signal Processing in Cochlear Implant Research
Cochlear implants are electronic devices that have enabled individuals with severe to profound hearing losses to regain some hearing. There is, however, substantial variability in speech perception performance among users of cochlear implants. One factor that may contribute to the individual differences is the way in which the device converts acoustic sound waves into electrical stimulation: th...
